The busiest Christmas ever

GamCare, which is part of the National Gambling Support Network, reported that December last year was the busiest Christmas they've had in terms of contact from concerned gamblers and represented a 39% year-on-year increase. Yet August 2023 was the busiest month for calls of the year.

Increased visibility

The specific reasons behind these 2023 increases are not apparent. It may be due in part to growing awareness of the helpline and services. Also, some calls were from individuals phoning as they were concerned about the gambling habits of people they know–this was especially true for the Christmas period.

Another factor that will undoubtedly lead to increased support and interactions is the launch of WhatsApp. Last year, this was added to offer more visibility and support and accounted for 6,000 interactions.

Speaking out early

While it could be viewed as a concern that figures are up, it's also a positive trend in that more people than ever are in contact with services for support earlier on. In the long run, this may help them to manage problematic gambling at an earlier stage.

Last year, GambleAware found that 2 in 3 adults (64%) who have experienced problem gambling have never spoken about it to anyone, and 39% say that this is because of the stigmas associated with gambling.

So, the fact that these helpline numbers have hit a record highlights that more and more people with gambling problems are speaking to someone and gamble responsibly.
