Students spending more than they can afford
A new version of the Annual Student Gambling Survey shows that university students are overspending regardless of the cost-of-living crisis.
Gamstop and Ygam surveyed 2000 students across Britain. They found that 60% of students had gambled at least once in the past year. This has, however, decreased from 71% in 2023. On average, the results showed that student gamblers lost £1833 annually, and 15% lost £50 or more every week.
The figures also show that 46% of the students said that gambling had negatively affected their time at university as it has impacted social activities and has contributed to missed deadlines. 23% said they have used student loan money to gamble, and 8% had to get an overdraft to support their gambling.
