Gambling Harm Support Takes 3.5 Days
New data from GambleAware shows that, on average, individuals seeking gambling harm support were offered treatment within 3.5 days.
New data from GambleAware shows that, on average, individuals seeking gambling harm support were offered treatment within 3.5 days. This data covers the period between October and December 2023.
The information comes from those seeking support from the National Gambling Support Network, a service made up of 11 organisations commissioned through GambleAware.
Gambling harm support figures
January 2024 showed there were 4 816 interactions (in the form of online chats and phone calls) to the National Gambling Helpline. This is the highest number of recorded interactions since the helpline began.
Further data shows that since April 2023, over 28,000 individuals have received brief interventions (which are conversations via the helpline that last twenty minutes or more).
A further three years
GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline, which has been running for over 25 years. In early 2023, the helpline was at risk, and GambleAware agreed to fund GamCare for three years.
This increase in calls and online chats just goes to show how much the service is required and how much it is being utilised. Thankfully, measures are in place to try to prevent gambling harm.
As we have previously discussed, stake limits will be introduced for online slot games later this year, and a proposed statutory levy on gambling companies would allow funding for further research and support.
The levy would require online gambling operators to pay a 1% fee, which the Gambling Commission would distribute to the NHS and UK Research and Innovation.
