888 Casino To Remove Some London Adverts
Some adverts by gambling operator 888 Casino will be withdrawn from the Transport for London (TFL) Network.
Some adverts by gambling operator 888 will be withdrawn from the Transport for London (TFL) Network.
It's reported that the rate of problem gambling in London is almost double the average seen across the rest of the country. Therefore, some gambling adverts on TfL will be withdrawn.
The current London mayor, Sadiq Khan, pledged a manifesto in 2021 to remove all gambling adverts from TfL. However, this is yet to be implemented. In fact, it's unclear why some adverts are still getting through and being advertised on TfL.
It hasn't been implemented yet because there is still no agreed-upon definition of harmful gambling. Until this is agreed upon, the ban cannot be implemented across London.
888 will remove some of its adverts from TfL as they said they have listened to feedback about their advertising campaigns. Although they say they're not in breach of advertising standards or regulations, their latest campaign is in question.
The campaign has been questioned for its suitability, and it's unknown why TfL accepted it in the first place.
On the London Underground, 888.com launched a campaign which featured slogans including, ‘This carriage is now a casino.' In black cabs, they advertise with slogans saying, ‘Fancy a spin?’
888 has confirmed that some of its adverts will be removed from TfL as they do not represent the brand effectively, and there's been criticism that the current ads trivialise gambling.
